Getting Life Back After a Stroke

Expert neurological physiotherapy delivered to your home in St Albans and across Hertfordshire. No referral needed — just call.

What Is Stroke Rehabilitation Physiotherapy?

A stroke can affect movement, strength, coordination and balance in ways that vary enormously from person to person. Neurological physiotherapy helps retrain the brain and body to regain as much function as possible — using the brain's natural ability to adapt and form new connections, a process called neuroplasticity.

With the right specialist support, many stroke survivors continue to make meaningful gains in movement and independence — even months or years after the event.

How We Can Help

Sheryll specialises in stroke rehabilitation and works with patients at all stages of recovery — from those recently discharged from hospital through to longer-term survivors looking to make further gains.

What stroke rehab can improve:

  • Weakness or paralysis in the arm, hand or leg
  • Difficulty with walking, balance or coordination
  • Spasticity (muscle stiffness or tightness)
  • Fatigue management and energy conservation
  • Upper limb function for everyday tasks
  • Confidence and safety with movement at home
  • Preventing secondary complications (falls, contractures, pain)

What to Expect From Your First Session

The initial assessment is the foundation of everything that follows. Sheryll will visit your home and spend time understanding your goals, what's changed since the stroke, and what matters most to you and your family.

  • Assessment: Thorough review of movement, strength, balance, sensation and functional ability
  • Goal setting: What do you want to be able to do? Walk to the garden? Pick up grandchildren? Cook independently?
  • Treatment plan: A clear, personalised programme of physiotherapy sessions and home exercises
  • Progress reviews: Regular reassessment to track improvement and update goals

Sessions are tailored to your home environment — practising the actual movements and activities that matter in your day-to-day life.

Why Home Visits Make a Difference

For stroke survivors, practising rehabilitation in the environment where you actually live is clinically more effective than doing the same exercises in a clinic. We work on getting in and out of your specific chair, navigating your hallway, managing your stairs.

It also removes the exhausting challenge of hospital travel — which for many stroke survivors is a significant barrier to regular therapy.

NHS vs Private Stroke Physio

NHS physiotherapy following a stroke is typically limited — often just a handful of sessions in the weeks immediately following discharge. Many survivors plateau not because they've reached their ceiling, but because regular specialist input stopped.

Private physiotherapy provides:

  • As many sessions as clinically needed, for as long as you need them
  • Consistent therapist (always Sheryll — no handovers)
  • Flexible scheduling around you and your family
  • Immediate start — no NHS waiting list
  • Home visits included as standard — no travel needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to see you?

No. You can contact us directly. While we welcome referrals from GPs, consultants and hospital teams, you don't need one to book a session.

How soon after a stroke can I start?

The sooner, the better. Neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to recover — is greatest in the early weeks and months. If you or a family member is waiting for NHS input or has already been discharged, contact us as soon as possible.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies considerably. Many patients benefit from weekly or twice-weekly sessions initially, reducing in frequency as they progress. Sheryll will give you an honest assessment of what to expect after the initial appointment.

My stroke was several years ago. Is it too late?

No. Research has shown that the brain retains some plasticity for years after a stroke. Patients who feel they've "plateaued" sometimes make significant further progress with intensive, specialist physiotherapy.

Can you work alongside NHS physiotherapy?

Yes, absolutely. Many patients receive NHS therapy and supplement it with private sessions. Sheryll will liaise with other treating clinicians with your consent.
